With the Camcorders from Blackmagic Design, all of which are in the medium to high price range, professional filmmakers can choose from an enormous range of camcorders. The Australian digital film camera manufacturer trumps with quality, because the film enthusiast can choose between the smallest compact models (Pocket, Cinema and Production) and large broadcast cameras (URSA), equipped with 4K and Full HD format. Compatible with Canon Micro Four Thirds as well as EF bayonet lenses, they offer a wide variety at an incomparable level of quality.
Camcorders from Canon
Canon offers a wide selection for both amateur and professional filmmakers: handy handheld camcorders for Full HD video recordings for the quick recording sequence in between (private occasions such as vacation experiences, company events or get-togethers in the business sector). The lightweight models in the Legria series from the lower and mid-range price category offer excellent user-friendliness (simple touchscreen operation) and a wide range of features for convenient recording. The devices in the C, XA and XC series have a greater dynamic range and video formats in 4K resolution suitable for professionals. The advantages of camcorders over cameras with a video function are evident: enormous zoom function, the best possible sound quality (some with stereo sound), first-class panning and high recording capacity.
Camcorders from Sony
Similarly well positioned, with comfortable shoulder cameras for professionals through to handbag-compatible Handycam is Sony. Users are also offered a wide range of lenses to choose from: Sony's 4K-capable compact camcorders with Full HD quality can be combined with film and SLR lenses using an adapter in addition to E-mount and A-mount lenses.
Camcorders from Panasonic
Panasonic cooperates with Leica. The Dicomar lens, especially in the 4K format version, can be combined with Panasonic Ultra HD camcorders and is suitable for extremely fast-moving subjects. The other cameras in the HC-X series with 4K and Full HD formats have also been designed with the demands of professionals in mind. The lightweight handycams for vacation shoots or for small series at events, such as the Panasonic HC-V series camcorders, are just right for amateurs with their Full HD quality.
Purchase criteria for camcorders
The purchase criteria often depend on the user's area of application. For example, camcorders can cover different purposes for which a DSLR or system camera needs several lenses. Camcorders sometimes differ massively in terms of the technology used and their standards:
- What video resolution can you record?
- Which zoom is installed? Digital or optical?
- What focal lengths does the camcorder cover?
- Does the camcorder have a built-in ND filter?
- Does the camcorder have image stabilization?
Instead of deciding between a camcorder or an SLR camera, we recommend choosing between a camcorder and a system camera. This is because system cameras offer more advantages for video than a single-lens reflex camera. A popular example is the focus system; an SLR system can only focus on the eyes or faces if it has a hybrid mirror.
Camcorders can also do this, as the sensor is not covered by a mirror.
When using a camcorder, we recommend using either a gimbal or a video tripod with a fluid head. These combinations ensure a steady image
As things stand today, we clearly recommend a camcorder, as the built-in zoom of the camcorder makes it possible to have a higher exposure performance than is the case with a cell phone. With smartphones, the zoom is often performed digitally and not by moving glass elements. Another factor is that a camcorder has a larger image sensor, which enables a better depth of field, as well as more light falling on the sensor, making low-light situations easier to handle.
An optical zoom is fundamentally different from a digital zoom. Surely you also use the zoom / crop tool on your pictures & photos, the digital zoom works in a similar way, the image section is digitally reduced and the image is thus enlarged.
This leads to a high level of image noise and a high loss of detail, as the focal length does not actually change, only the image section.
With an optical zoom, the focal length is changed by shifting the glass elements. This shift enables better quality.
An ND filter can help you to keep the exposure time the same, even if the aperture of your lens is opened wider. Especially when the sun is shining brightly, the ND filter also helps to preserve all the details in the image and enable an image without burnt-out areas in the picture.
