B+W is one of the leading manufacturers of filters of all kinds. The range offers something for all applications, so you can take good photos even in difficult conditions, among other things. Filters that have a screw mount perform a variety of tasks in a photographer's everyday life. The most common are the classic UV protection filters, which are often used where the conditions of the environment are not ideal for a lens, such as on a beach or in a dusty hall. Thus, this type of filter is the ideal protection against dirt and scratches. Furthermore, there is a wide range of the brand as far as filters with special effects are concerned. Thus, there are polarizing filters, neutral density (ND) filters, infrared filters, and many others that create an exciting effect in the photographs.
When it comes to filters, the quality plays a crucial role, because with inferior filters, the image quality often suffers. With B+W filters, the quality of the images taken is not affected. By attaching the filter to the screw thread of the respective lens, it is achieved that no unwanted particles get in contact with the lens. It also ensures safe and comfortable use.
Which quality factors are decisive when choosing a filter?
- Optical material: plastic, window glass or optical glass
- Coating: the more coatings that have been applied, the more the quality may suffer
What are the different types of B+W filters?
Gray filter / ND filter:
The model manages to filter out annoying reflections from the image. In addition to its actual function of filtering out annoying reflections from photographs, it also has the nice side effect of making water bead off of it. Thanks to the protective coating applied to the existing 7 layers per filter side, this is possible.
Polarizing Filter / Polarizing Filter:
This filter is one of the most popular among photographers, as with the help of this filter, annoying reflections from non-metallic objects, such as a water surface or glass panes, no longer appear on the lens.
Protective filter:
This type of filters can remain permanently mounted in front of the lens, as they are absolutely colorless. Thanks to the MRC nano coating, they are extremely low-reflection, so images are not distorted. So the photo quality remains the same.
Black and white filters:
Black and white photography is also definitely still of great importance in today's world, as it allows you to depict motifs in a completely different way than if you were to depict them in color. These filters save the extra miles of using an image processing software. They depict the motif directly in the desired effect. They are available in different colors, each of which has different functions. A red filter, for example, makes clouds in an image stand out. Yellow filters, on the other hand, harmonize the black and white effect.
Close-up lenses:
These filters are very popular in macro photography. They allow further magnification of the captured subject. The filters are available in different strengths, so you can always get your desired result. It is also possible to combine several close-up lenses, but this requires some expertise, which, however, can be learned quickly.
Infrared filters:
These types of filters cut off the incoming infrared light. This prevents the image from becoming blurry and saves it from color distortion.
UV filter:
This filter can be used to bring more contrast and more sharpness to the image. They filter out the portion of ultraviolet light, which is not visible to us humans. This is especially crucial if you are photographing by the sea or in the Alps, where the UV exposure is higher. However, depending on the quality of the UV filter, you will lose sharpness and a lot of light coming into the lens.
Gray graduated filter:
This type of filter is used to darken the sky or foreground. They are each half neutral gray tint, which blends smoothly into the uncolored half of the filter. The rotatable B+W filter mount allows exact horizontal alignment when the filter is screwed on tightly. The filter is ideal for sunrises or sunsets, as it gives the sky a beautiful effect. The gray graduated filter ensures that only part of the image is exposed darker.
