The result of the "Quer" photo competition

Looking laterally - photographing laterally - thinking laterally?

Photography offers endless possibilities and every photographer, whether amateur or professional, shows the many facets of this world through their pictures. Individual terms alone offer a variety of starting points and possible interpretations. So everyone was called upon to think "outside the box". Lateral can be so many things: The format, the lines, the horizon, the pose or something completely different. Over 600 participants took up the challenge and submitted more than 1,500 creative photos. The winning images make use of many different genres and demonstrate the broad spectrum of photography. They will also be published in the new Snapshot magazine which this time appears in landscape format as a special feature.

Photo competition Cross place 1 Anne Bühler
Photo competition 2nd place Eugen Sellin

Second place went to Eugen Selling from Cologne. It is a monochrome photo with absolute creative balance. He photographed tank wagons in Canada, which stand crosswise in front of silos and look like miniatures. The photographer skillfully plays with proportions and lines. He explains the story behind it: "I took this photo during my first forays through the neighborhood of my student accommodation in North Vancouver, Canada. The location was rather uncomfortable on the shoulder of a highway. My host father was totally surprised: 'I've been passing here twice a day for 10 years, but I've never seen it like this before' [...] Finding new perspectives is often not easy, but if you succeed, it always enriches your own portfolio."

Across New York: Tino Gärtner came third with his "flying cyclist", as he calls his motif. The expressive street picture conveys an impression of freedom, life and joy. The cyclist really does seem to be flying dreamily across the metropolis, even if he perhaps only wanted to air his armpits. The prizewinner from Salzgitter told us that he is always on the lookout for interesting motifs and that the picture was taken near Times Square in 2016. "I actually just wanted to take an interesting street shot from a different perspective. When I saw the cyclist coming towards me and watching me, I took this unique snapshot."

Like the previous picture, Martin Sanchez also comes from the USA, more precisely from New Jersey. His breathtaking drone shot, on the other hand, was taken in Iceland and won fourth prize. It captivates with its intense green color in several tones and its mysticism. After he was notified of his win, he wrote to us about the effort involved. On the last day of his trip, he visited the Fjaðràrgljúfur Canyon and everything was prepared, but unfortunately it was raining cats and dogs. Again and again he had to return to his truck and dry his equipment. He waited and hoped for better weather the whole time. The photographer was on site for a total of eleven hours. Only when he was about to give up and leave did the weather suddenly clear up and the gorge began to show its full beauty. It was worth the wait!

In fifth place, the jury had no idea how this picture could have come about. But that is precisely what is interesting about this picture. It shows shadows and people or figures on an almost two-dimensional level. The photo is very graphic and plays excellently with the contrasts in black and white. Hans Wichmann from Cologne explains at the end: "The photo shows the view from above of an exhibition hall in the Duisburg Landscape Park. A Japanese artist has used beamers suspended from the ceiling to project barcodes onto the 100-metre-long floor of the hall. The people depicted are visitors to the exhibition. The floor was accessible to everyone. I was standing in the gallery." He himself is 68 years old and has been taking photographs since the age of 10.

We would like to thank all participants for the many excellent photos. Unfortunately, only five photos were able to win, although many more would have deserved it. We encourage you to take part in future photo competitions
